The list is short.
Lots of businesses were contacted (UTD, Central
Market, CompUsa Training, Southwest, etc.), but either the cost
wasn't suitable (not free), the availability wasn't suitable,
or the room was too small.
If you don't like the choices, PLEASE become part of the solution, and
send the board a specific contact at a business who has enough authority
to approve a request for use of a meeting room.
Since we don't want to inconsiderately keep the reservation on the facilities' meeting rooms outstanding for very long, we will close the voting by Feb. 28. This will allow us to tell the generous people at the facilities who do not "win," to release their room from a reservation hold. We're sorry we couldn't time it so that the vote was held in person at the next JavaMug meeting. We did push for a Feb. meeting deadline, but corporations have to go through "channels," and some decisions were still pending.
Here are the 3 specific location choices for voting by JavaMug membership. You may e-mail your vote to a special yahoo group by clicking on this link to provide additional comments, or one of the links below. You DO NOT need to join a yahoo group to vote. Your e-mail will suffice.

1. Ranchview High School, Irving [ 19 votes ]
Location: Off LBJ between Luna and MacArthur
Advantanges: Easy access via LBJ or I-35 from many directions including mid-Cities, Lewisville. Very fast access to airport for speakers that need to catch a plane after, or arrive by plane before.
Disadvantages: May need to have an alternate location for 1 month in summer.
Facilities: Unknown. Meeting would be held in cafeteria. If someone reports back to board on facilities, we will let you know. If this choice "wins", someone will visit to ensure it will fit our needs. From e-mail with contact at school, it appeared suitable.
President's comment I appreciate their offer and understand why a lot of people would like it, but not a great choice for a user group. Indications are also that we can't use this for one month of the year in the summer, which also makes this the least palatable on this list.
2. Parish Episcopal School, Farmers Branch [ 7 votes ]
Location: Off LBJ & Midway between Alpha Rd. and Spring Valley
Advantanges: Easy access via LBJ, I-35, or Bush Tollway from many directions including airport, mid-Cities, Lewisville, Addison. Open access to parking and building.
Disadvantages: None known, but with any school or college, a school function could bump an outside group's use. The school didn't predict this would happen though, since they had several meeting areas.
Facilities: Regular meeting room will hold up to 80 people. Larger meeting room will hold up to 400 people. Chairs only, no tables. Cafeteria available to eat pizza before meeting starts.
President's comment This is the old Arco building, and designed as a premiere technology space. It is a great building, and the meeting rooms are professional. The bigger issue here is just ensuring access. Because of security (or more probably insurance) reasons, there must be a guard. They will fund a guard, and may have 24 hour security in the future. We may also contribute to having a guard during meetings. As a venue, it could allow us to have large meetings with multiple breakout groups. It could even work for small conference-like meetings, which I have had many requests for. Speculative, but indeed a possibility to be a better choice over time. Lastly, because this is a private school, they may have more freedom than a public school to host events (speculative again, but worth thinking about).
3. Sun Microsystems, Dallas [ 30 votes ]
Location: Dallas North Tollway between Arapaho Rd. and Keller Springs
Advantages: Easy access via Dallas North Tollway or Bush Tollway.
Disadvantages: Outside doors lock at 7:00 p.m. which requires sign on door to call with a cell phone upstairs. Sign could also say door entrance will be checked at 7:15 and 7:30 for latecomers. Sun says they have many meetings at night and it hasn't been a problem to let someone in after 7:00. Sun representative will always be at the meeting to give access to elevators which require a key card after 7:00 p.m. Sun does use the rooms at night, so it's always possible we could be preempted by a corporate event. But that can happen with any location.
Facilities: Regular meeting room will hold up to 160 people. Room can be configured with or without tables (without if need to sit 160). Pizza can be arranged on tables around outside walls of room. Parking might need a garage access code if there are more than 70 cars. Sun will give us an access code for the garage when requested.
President's comment Sun would be a perfect choice because they are still the shepherds of Java. Limited access can be dealt with. This is a working Sun office, which may mean access to hardware and support. As a way to hook us deep into Sun, this is the perfect choice. On the negative side, we have vendors that are competitors to Sun, and I have seen this as a problem sometimes. The Fort Worth UG has had issues in the past about "palatable" sponsors, and have had to turn some away. So, good because of Java, but that also might cause more linkage with Sun, and less with other companies that are just as dedicated to Java.

Please give us a reason, or be part of the solution and give us a contact with authority to approve use of their facility.
President's comment The best place I have ever met was Infomart. Lots of meeting rooms helped create a SIG atmosphere second to none, but Infomart got out of the user group business years ago. If we can get another Infomart, I am all for that, but it's highly unlikely, so 2 and 3 are great choices for us.
The location move is expected to be in April, but we can use JCPenney in March.

Yes, we are "just" a user group, but we have a responsibility to be the best user group to our fellow members, the Java community, and sponsors.
