"Programming with Java!" by Tim Ritchey (New Riders; ISBN 1-56205-533-X) is a wordy book that was originally written for the Alpha version of Java and then updated for Beta 2.0. You go 100 pages before getting into programming, which is the point of this book. In these 100 pages, you will learn how Java solves every problem facing the Internet almost. I tried to learn Java from this book originally and found it to be a poor book. I would recommend against buying this one.
