"Programming Perl" by Wall, Christainsen, & Schwartz (O'Reilly; ISBN 1-56592-149-6) is absolutely one of the best books on programming I've ever read. It is excellent for learning the language and it is a decent reference book too. If you need to use Perl, this is the book to get.
