"Java Sourcebook" by Ed Anuff (John Wiley & Sons; ISBN 0-471-14859-8) is very similiar to "Java in a Nutshell". It is closer to a tutorial than the other. Also, it has better fonts and a ton of useful short illustrative programs. This is a good book to go through and play with to learn the language. It is Java book I use the most of any of them that I have.
