"Graphic Java: Mastering the AWT" by Geary & McClellan (Prentice Hall; ISBN 0-13-565847-0) is the only AWT book on the market that I know of. It is poorly titled as really it focuses on its own extensions of AWT and how to use them. Also, not once have I found the answer to any of my AWT questions in this book. I recommend against buying it.

The authors are working on a second edition right now and are taking feedback so we can hope that the second edition is better.
