"How to Run Successful Projects III: The Silver Bullet" (Addison-Wesley; ISBN 0-201-74806-1) by Fergus O'Connell is a book on project management. The timing is odd. I had just finished reviewing another book where I bashed the author for calling something a silver bullet. Now I get a book that has it in the title.
The most annoying part of this book is the author's overestimate of his own work. An example is "The Ten Steps don't just guarantee a successful project, they are also the minimum that has to be done for a succesful project." Not only have I seen projects fail that follow the steps in the book I have also worked on projects that succeed that didn't follow them. One example is that he states that not having one leader will guarantee project failure. Well, guess what, I've worked on several projects that didn't work this way yet were a success.
It's sad that he takes this arrogant attitude because the book is full of good advice for project managers. He breaks them out into easy to remember steps. The writing does make project management interesting, which is hard to do.
On the whole, I recommend this book provided you can stomach the author's arrogant attitude because it does have good advice.
