Software Configuration Management Patterns Review

Review by Billy Barron, Avatier Corporation

"Software Configuration Management Patterns" by Stephen Berczuk with Brad Appleton (Addison-Wesley; ISBN 0-201-74117-2) is a book that I have been waiting for. Software Configuration Management and Patterns are a natural fit for each other. Also, many (most?) software projects do a poor of software configuration management.

This is an amazing short book for the computer industry as it is only about 200 pages. That's good because it means the book is not full of unneeded padding we find in many computer books.

The book is well written and easy to read. The problem with most literature I've read on SCM is that it tends to be very dry and boring. This book is full of practical advice that is based on the real world experiences of the authors. Related to this is that the book often talks about the pros and cons of different source control systems. This is good because most developers have to use multiple source controls systems in their career and some, such as myself, are tusing two at the same time.

I recommend this long overdue to anyone who is responsible for source control or doing builds.
