Review of Beyond Chaos

Review by Billy Barron, Tek-Tools

"Beyond Chaos: The Expert Edge in Managing Software Development" (Addison-Wesley; ISBN 0-201-71960-6) by Larry L. Constantine is a book that is a series of essays for software development managers, such as project managers. Larry Constantine is a well known author for his papers and books on user interface design. His writings are always excellent and I always get new ideas from him.

In this book, Larry did not write every essay in this book. He did write about a third of them. The most of the rest are written by people who I am familiar with. Larry did a great job of selecting valuable essays. Most books made up of many essay tend to be very uneven in content with some papers being excellent and others being poor. Though I have not yet read every essay in this book because I am taking my time and digesting them, every one has been excellent.

The book is divided into 6 sections.  The first section covers papers about people  including how to correctly hire the right people.  The second section is about to actually manage a project under normal circumstances.  The other sections talk about how to deal with pressure, quality, processes, practices, leadership and teamwork.

After I finish reading this book, I plan on giving it to my team leader to read next.  I highly recommend this book.  It is one of the best books I've read on project management in quite a while.
