Programs:
-
No information regarding the confirmation for the October speaking engagement was available.
Pete's brief analysis of the presentation showed that the title was somewhat misleading and the presentation by Dr. Datta was more of a product sale. At the same time Pete evaluated the overall quality of speakers at JavaMUG events as very high. According to Jay, the Boulder group requests presentation slides in advance to make sure that the meeting benefits the group and does not serve as a product launching pad. The Board recognized excellent work by Program Director, Billy Barron.
New Business:
- Last month minutes:
-
As no amendments were proposed, the August minutes were approved.
- Elections:
-
The officers of the Board present confirmed their intent to run for the next term.
-
The Board authorized Secretary to post a call for nominations on the JavaMUG list after having reviewed the text in the course of communication by e-mail prior to the meeting .
- Policy issues:
-
The Board approved the definition of meeting sponsor stated by President as
- Definition of Meeting Sponsor. Approved through Barbara, Promotions
Director.
- Meeting Sponsor supplies food for meeting.
- Meeting Sponsor supplies something for "give-away".
- Meeting Sponsor has the floor for up to 4-5(?) minutes to make their
presentation.
- Meeting Sponsor collects and keeps Business Cards.
- Meeting Sponsor participates in drawing at their option.
-
Pete proposed to move the discussion on the definition of "Other" to the electronic forum. The following text is subject to review:
- Definition of Other: Someone, that has for our membership,
significant benefit in the form of information (intangible) or a
"give-away" (tangible) for our public drawing.
- Other can come to meeting with information or "give-away."
- Other has the floor for the up to 2 minute General Announcement
currently allocated.
- Other participates in the drawing of their "give-away" at their
option.
-
The discussion on the definition of educational seminar opportunities and level of JavaMUG support for such
was tabled. Pete argued that the Board should state a policy regulating the relationships between JavaMUG and educational vendors. Irina gave examples of the JavaMUG's promotional support for Java classes in the year 2002 (existing practices) and raised a question of policy interpretation. Bob spoke in favor of more tangible discounts for educational events to benefit the membership. In his own words, "the official sponsor gets to speak in font of the membership" ... and non-sponsors should be allowed "to put out materials" provided there are no complaints. Jim's proposal was to create a special education page where vendors can place their advertisements for Java seminars for a nominal fee under the condition that they provide incentives in the form of free admissions/discounts. The discussion is to continue with the input from all members of the Board.
- Lone Star Software Symposium
-
Based on the definition of "Sponsor" the Board decided to disseminate information about the LSSS via links, announcements/notifications, flyers.
- Miscellaneous:
-
In response to enquiry by a member about starting a listserv as a venue to post resumes it was said that such list exists and is not an official JavaMUG service, although it is moderated by another member. The Board did not see a need to replicate the service.
-
According to Bob's report, 1000 bookmarks would be available at the next meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 10:35 PM.
